S2 Ep. 34: Thinking in Pictures

When you hear the word “apple,” what comes to mind? Some people instantly visualize a juicy red apple, while others might merely recognize the word without a clear image. This distinct difference in cognitive processing categorizes us into ‘word thinkers’ and ‘visual thinkers’. Word thinkers, while being quick to respond, often restrict their understanding to just the foundational facts.

In stark contrast, visual thinkers, frequently those who are neurodiverse or on the spectrum, process information through vibrant and elaborate mental images. This means their reactions might be slower, but the depth of creativity, innovation, and unconventional problem-solving they bring is unparalleled.

The intriguing “apple test” brings this distinction to light, where some can easily conjure a vivid image of an apple, while others see just darkness. What’s more, today’s technologically-driven society, bursting with video games, dynamic apps, and cinematic experiences, is subtly shifting a larger segment of the population towards this visual way of thinking. The rise of visual mediums begs the question: are we nurturing a generation more adept at thinking outside the box?
